The national language is Japanese. Many scholars consider it one of the ALTAIC languages; others believe it is possibly akin to Korean. For writing, the Japanese borrowed (about ad 400) Chinese characters, and adapted them (about ad 800) as phonetic symbols; continuously reduced, the number of characters in common use in the second half of the 20th century was about 1850.
